Welcome to Block #6 of my 10" Quilt Block Series!
This block is called Ruby North Star, a striking 10" quilt block featuring a classic hourglass center, star-like points, and rich geometric details. While it may look intricate at first glance, the block is constructed from simple units including half-square triangles, strip sets, and easy stitch-and-flip corners.
Whether you're sewing along with the series or making a single sampler block, Ruby North Star is a fun project that combines traditional quilting techniques with a fresh, modern look.
About the Ruby North Star Block
This block is built from several easy-to-make units:
Corner units made from half-square triangles and snowball corners
Side units created from strip sets
House-shaped accent units
A classic hourglass center
Take your time with the trimming steps and you'll be rewarded with beautifully matching points and crisp intersections.
Tips for Success
Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance.
Press carefully after each step.
Trim units to the specified size before assembly.
Lay out all units before sewing the rows together to ensure correct orientation.
A Note About Fabric Selection
The sample block uses 12 different fabrics to create depth, contrast, and the faceted appearance of a cut ruby gemstone. While the pattern can certainly be made with fewer fabrics, doing so will change the overall look of the block.
Using multiple fabrics helps highlight the individual units and creates the jewel-like sparkle that inspired the name Ruby North Star. If you prefer a simpler palette, try grouping similar fabrics together, but keep enough contrast between light, medium, and dark values to preserve the star design.
Remember, there is no wrong way to make this block—choose the fabrics that make you happy and fit your quilting style.
