Floral Vortex Quilt Block – Free 10" Quilt Block Pattern
Meet Floral Vortex, Block #8 in my 10" Blocks Series.
This block may look complicated at first, but I redesigned the construction to make it much more approachable. There are no templates and no paper piecing—just familiar piecing techniques, including half-square triangles, stitch-and-flip corners, and a partial seam.
About This Block
The idea for Floral Vortex started with a block I came across called Whirling Star. While researching it later, I discovered that several different quilt blocks have been published under the Whirling Star name, and I couldn't find a historical version that exactly matched the design I originally saw. What caught my attention was the wonderful sense of movement created by the shapes spinning around the center.
The version I first saw required templates or paper piecing, and you know I always enjoy finding another way! So I started playing with the construction to see if I could create a similar feeling using simple piecing techniques. After changing the shapes and reworking the construction, Floral Vortex was born. It isn't a reproduction of the original block, but my own design inspired by that whirling-star concept.
Floral Vortex at a Glance
Finished block size: 10" × 10"
Unfinished block size: 10½" × 10½"
Skill level: Confident Beginner / Intermediate
Techniques: Half-square triangles, stitch-and-flip, partial seams
Templates: None
Paper piecing: None
The partial seam is probably the part that looks the most intimidating, but don't let it put you off. You only leave part of the first seam unsewn, add the remaining pieces around the center, and then come back to finish that first seam. Once you've made one unit, the construction makes much more sense.
Choosing Fabrics
This block works especially well with good contrast between the background and the fabrics forming the vortex.
I used several colors in my sample to emphasize the different shapes and make the spinning design easier to see. Solids and reads-as-solids are especially effective, but this would also be a great block for using small-scale prints or scraps.
Try changing the color placement, too. Because several secondary shapes appear when the four sections come together, a different fabric arrangement can give Floral Vortex a completely different look.

Floral Vortex is Block #8, which means we're getting very close to completing all ten! Each block in this series finishes at 10" × 10", but I wanted every design to bring something a little different—whether that's a new construction method, an interesting secondary pattern, or simply a fun way to play with fabric and color.
