Golden Arrows – Free 10" Quilt Block Pattern

Block No. 9 of the 10" – 10 Blocks Free Pattern Serie

About This Block

This striking geometric quilt block features bold arrow-like shapes that come together to create a beautiful, symmetrical design. It may look complicated at first glance, but you can make it using traditional piecing techniques—no templates or foundation paper piecing (FPP) required!

There is a little extra fabric trimming involved, but I think the finished result is worth it! Whether you're making a sampler quilt or looking for an interesting block to add to your next quilting project, I hope you'll enjoy making Golden Arrows.

Fabric Selection

Golden Arrows looks especially striking when made with contrasting fabrics.

For the best results, choose fabrics with a clear difference in value so the arrow shapes stand out against the background. You can experiment with different color combinations, from warm autumn tones to bold, modern prints. This block is also a great way to use some of your favorite fabric scraps.

Cutting Instructions

The complete cutting chart, fabric measurements, and step-by-step assembly diagrams are included in the downloadable PDF pattern.

Before cutting, I recommend starching and pressing your fabrics to help improve accuracy, particularly when working with triangles and bias edges.

Tips for Making Golden Arrows

Here are a few things to keep in mind while making this block:

  • Maintain an accurate ¼" seam allowance. Small differences can affect how the units fit together.

  • Handle triangles carefully. Avoid stretching bias edges while sewing and pressing.

  • Press rather than iron. Gently lift and lower your iron to avoid distorting the pieces.

  • Check your measurements. Trim the units to the sizes indicated in the pattern before assembling the block.

  • Follow the diagrams. Pay attention to the orientation of each unit before sewing everything together.

Some extra trimming is necessary with this construction method, but it allows you to create the design without using templates or foundation paper piecing.

Part of the 10" Blocks Series

Golden Arrows is Block #9 which means we're getting very close to completing all ten! Each block in this series finishes at 10" × 10", but I wanted every design to bring something a little different—whether that's a new construction method, an interesting secondary pattern, or simply a fun way to play with fabric and color. Once all ten blocks are released, I'll bring them together into one quilt. CLICK HERE  to see all 10 blocks in the series.
