Welcome back to our quilting community! Today, I am absolutely thrilled to share the next installment of our ongoing mystery quilt series. Meet Flora Claws—Block #4 in our 10-part collection!
A little playful tweaking of the classic Bear Claws block is exactly how this design was born. This block beautifully balances bold, sharp geometric points with a soft, elegant layout. It looks incredibly intricate, but with a few clever quilting shortcuts, you’ll be piecing this like a pro in no time. Below, you’ll find the step-by-step instructions to create the individual units, assemble the block, and even put together a stunning 12-block quilt top!

Block Construction Guide
For this block, we will be diving into the 8-at-a-time Half-Square Triangle (HST) method to speed up our piecing.
The 8-at-a-Time HST Method
Layer & Mark: Place your (2) 5" squares right sides together. On the top square, use a fabric marker and ruler to draw a diagonal line from corner to corner in both directions, forming an X.
Sew: Stitch a seam exactly 1/4" away from both sides of each drawn line (4 stitched lines total).
Cut the Cross (+): Cut the square directly in half vertically and horizontally to create four equal quadrants.
Cut the Diagonals (X): Cut directly along both of your original drawn diagonal lines to yield 8 perfect Half-Square Triangles.
Press & Trim: Open up the pieces and press your seams. Trim your 8 completed HST units down to your final required size.
Did you know there are several different ways to make Half-Square Triangles? If you want to explore the pros and cons of each method and find the perfect one for your project, check out my full breakdown here!
TIP: If you are unfamiliar with sewing on a bias edge yet, here is a quick designer note: consider cutting your squares at larger instead of the standard measurement. This gives you a little extra fabric insurance so you have comfortable room for trimming and squaring up your units later!
