No 5. Apex Lotus Quilt Block – 10" Finished Block

Welcome to Block #5 in my 10" x 10" Quilt Block Series!

Today's featured block is Apex Lotus, a striking design that combines sharp points, snowballed corners, and a lotus-inspired center. The contrast between the strong geometric shapes and the soft floral appearance creates a block that looks intricate but can be made using familiar quilting techniques.

The center lotus motif draws the eye inward, while the pointed corner units create a sense of movement that radiates toward the edges of the block. Whether you choose bold, high-contrast fabrics or a softer color palette, this block offers plenty of opportunities to showcase your favorite prints.

Finished Size

  • Finished Block Size: 10" x 10"

  • Unfinished Block Size: 10½" x 10½"

Before You Begin

Please read through the pattern carefully before cutting your fabric.

Several units in this block can be made using different construction methods. For example, some units may be pieced individually, while others can be made using strip-piecing or alternative techniques. The pattern includes these options so you can choose the method that best suits your quilting style and fabric selection.

  • If you enjoy a scrappier look, you may prefer the individual piecing method.

  • If you are working with repeated color combinations, strip-piecing can save time and improve efficiency.

  • Half-square triangles can also be made using your preferred technique, provided the finished units match the required size.

Choose the method that works best for you and your project.

Fabric Selection Tips

Apex Lotus looks particularly effective when you use:

  • A focal fabric for the lotus center

  • Medium-to-dark fabrics for the surrounding accent units

  • A light background to emphasize the shape of the block

  • Strong contrast between adjacent fabrics to help define the lotus petals and pointed corner units

Don't be afraid to experiment with color placement. The same block can take on a completely different personality depending on your fabric choices.
