Woven Star 1.0 – Free PDF Quilt Block Pattern Download

Updated: 4 days ago

There’s something so satisfying about a block that looks complex… but comes together with a few clever steps. This is my Woven Star 1.0, a bold and modern block with that beautiful interwoven effect.

And yes—there will be more variations of this block coming later!

Before You Start (Important!)

This block involves bias edges. If you’ve heard that bias edges can be tricky—you’re not wrong. They can stretch, shift, and behave a little differently than straight grain. But don’t worry… with a bit of care, they’re totally manageable.

👉 If you’re a beginner, just take it slow and be mindful.

👉 Accuracy matters here—especially when matching points and seams.

Fabric Prep (Highly Recommended)

Before cutting:

  • Starch your fabric – this adds stability and helps prevent stretching

  • Let it dry and press flat before cutting. This one step alone will make a huge difference in how your block turns out.

Bias Edge Tips (Save These!)

When working with this block, keep these in mind:

Handle pieces gently Bias edges stretch easily—try not to move them around too much.

Press, don’t iron Lift and press your iron instead of dragging it across the fabric.

Let your machine feed the fabric Avoid pulling or pushing while sewing.

Use pins when needed Especially on longer seams or when matching points.

Take your time with matching This block relies on clean alignment—slow down at intersections.

About Matching & Accuracy

The “woven” effect really comes to life when your seams align nicely.

  • Match points carefully before sewing

  • Nest seams when possible

  • Don’t rush this part—it’s worth it 💛

Even if it’s not perfect, don’t stress. Each block will still look beautiful in the quilt.

You’ll find the full step-by-step instructions and diagrams below in this post.Follow the sequence carefully, especially when trimming and assembling units.

📏 Final block size: 9½″ (unfinished)

This block involves quite a bit of trimming, and a rotating cutting mat really helps speed things up while keeping everything accurate. If you have one, you’re all set—if not, you can find one here.

Quilt Layout

This sample quilt uses:

  • 17 Woven Star blocks

  • 18 background squares

  • Layout: 5 columns × 7 rows

The layout creates that lovely floating, woven illusion across the quilt top.
