🌟The Bold & Beautiful 16″ Star in the Cabin Block

Updated: Nov 17, 2025

Big blocks, bold design, and 2½″ strips — that’s all you need for this fun and fast project! This quilt finishes at 60″ × 76″ and is made up of twelve 16″ blocks arranged in four rows of three. It’s perfect for using up your favorite strip sets or coordinating fabric bundles that deserve to shine.

The block itself features a striking star-like layout framed with log-cabin-style movement. It’s geometric but not fussy — an ideal choice if you love quilts with structure and flow.

🧵 Construction Overview

Each block finishes at 16″ square, built from simple strip units and half-square triangles. Once your twelve blocks are assembled, arrange them into four rows of three, press seams alternately, and join the rows together.

Add a narrow 2½″ inner border to frame the design and a 4½″ outer border for balance. The finished quilt measures 60″ × 76″ — just right for a cozy throw or a small twin.

You’ll need a mix of 2½″ strips in various prints—I chose a dark background for contrast—along with coordinating border fabrics.

✂️ Important Note

The pattern calls for 3″ squares to make the Half-Square Triangles (HST), but you can also make HSTs entirely from your jelly roll strips by using My favorite Half Square Triangle Trimming Ruler
