Materials Needed for this Table runner patterns:

  • Background fabric (light print): 7/8 yard

  • Star (Dark Brown): 1/4 Yard

  • Star ( Red, Orange): Fat eighth of each

  • Backing fabric: ½ yard

  • Batting: 16” x 39”

  • Optional: Green rickrack or bias for edge decoration

Cutting Instructions:

From Orange Fabric:

  • B (3) 3" square

  • D (6) 3½" x 1½"

From Red Fabric:

  • B (3) 3" square

  • D (6) 3½" x 1½"

From Dark Brown Fabric:

  • B (6) 3" square

  • C (6) 1½" square

From Background Fabric

  • B (12) 3" square

  • A (12) 2½" square

  • C (6) 1½" square

  • (2) 7½" square and cut them in half diagonally—this will give you 4 triangles. These will be your table runner's 4 corners.

  • (1) 12½" square, cut diagonally in both directions to make 4 large triangles. These will be your side triangles.

  • (3) 2.5"x width of the fabric (WOF), these will be the border.

Block Assembly Instructions:

  1. Make half-square triangles (HST):

Use the two-at-a-time method to make HSTs pairing the background fabric with each color: 6 orange, 6 red, and 12 brown.

    • Start with two 3" fabric squares

    • Place them right sides together.

    • Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the back of the lighter square.

    • Sew ¼" away from both sides of the drawn line.

    • Cut along the line between the seams to get 2 HSTs.

    • Trim to 2.5" square and press the seam open. Slotted Trimmers make trimming HSTs faster, easier, and more accurate. Click the photo to grab yours and speed up your quilting!

  2. Sew four 1½" squares—two from the background fabric and two from the brown fabric—together to make a four-patch block.

  3. Attach piece C to the four-patch block in the order shown (like a log cabin).

    1. Start with strip #1 – sew it to one side of the four-patch, but stop ¼" before the end.

    2. Add strips #2 and #3 – sew them on as you would in log cabin construction.

    3. For strip #4, fold strip #1 out of the way, then sew strip #4 in place.

    4. Finish by folding strip #1 back down and sewing the remaining seam to close the loop.

  4. Make 2 sets of HST pairs: Sew two HSTs together to form one unit. Make two of these units.

  5. Attach the HST units to the center block: Sew one HST unit to the left and one to the right of the center unit.

  6. Assemble the rows: Sew the upper and lower rows as shown in the layout.

  7. Join all rows together: Attach the top and bottom rows to the center section to complete the block

🧵 Assembling the Table Runner Top

  1. Lay out the Blocks:

Arrange the 3 star-blocks vertically, as shown in the diagram.

  2. Add Corner and Side Triangles:

    • Attach corner triangles to all 4 corners.

✳️ Tip: Match the center point of the triangle with the block's center for accurate placement.

    • Attach side triangles to the left and right sides of each block

✳️ Tip: Align the 90° angle of the triangle with the block edge. The tips (dog ears) will overhang—these will be trimmed later.

  3. Join the Rows:

Sew the blocks and triangles into rows. Then sew the rows together to complete the top layout.

  4. Trim the Edges:

Square up and trim the edges to create a clean, straight edge all around.

  5. Add Borders:

    • First, sew the top and bottom borders. Trim the extra length.

    • Then add the left and right borders. Trim again if needed.

  6. Optional Appliqué:

Add a vine or line motif to the borders for extra charm, if you’d like.

Quilting & Finishing:

  1. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing.

  2. Quilt as desired (echo around stars or straight-line stitch).

  3. Trim excess batting and backing.

  4. Bind the edge using your preferred method.
