Mastering the Stitch-and-Flip Technique

Updated: Nov 23, 2025

A simple method that adds perfect angles to your quilt blocks

If you’ve been following my tutorials, you’ve probably seen me mention the Stitch-and-Flip technique many times. It’s one of my favorite ways to create angled corners without having to cut tiny triangles. This method is beginner-friendly, works with scraps, and gives clean, accurate results once you get the hang of it.

Today I’ll walk you through how it works, share some helpful tips, and you can download the free pattern at the end of this blog.

What Is Stitch-and-Flip?

Stitch-and-Flip (or sew-and-flip) is a quilting technique where you place a small square on the corner of a larger piece, sew along the diagonal, flip open, and trim. It’s commonly used for:

  • Snowball corners

  • Flying geese

  • Star points

  • Decorative angled corners

  • Adding movement and shapes to a block without cutting tricky angles

It’s simple, but accuracy matters—especially when several units come together in one block.

How to Use the Stitch-and-Flip Technique

  1. Place the small square on the corner of the main piece, right sides together.

  2. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the small square.

  3. Sew directly on the line.

  4. Flip the corner open to check alignment before trimming. Make sure the edges line up well.

  5. Trim ¼″ away from the seam.

  6. Press the triangle open for a clean, crisp finish.

Repeat on the remaining corners as your pattern indicates.

Helpful Tips for Better Results

  • Use a sharp pencil or fine marker for accurate lines.

  • Sew a hair inside the marked line—this keeps the finished unit from coming up short.

  • Flip and check alignment before trimming.

  • Press gently to avoid stretching bias edges.

  • A little spray starch helps keep everything crisp.
