Pumpkin & Bat Quilt Block

Free Pattern

Finished Sizes: 4½" × 4½", 10" × 10"

Looking for a fun little Halloween sewing project? This Pumpkin & Bat Quilt Block combines a bright patchwork pumpkin with a pieced bat flying across the center. The entire design is traditionally pieced, with no appliqué or paper piecing required.

The free pattern includes two finished sizes, so you can turn the same design into anything from a quick coaster to a placemat—or repeat the blocks to make a larger Halloween quilt.

Two Block Sizes

4½" × 4½" finished block
The smaller version is just the right size for a Halloween coaster. Make one for a quick project, or sew a whole set for your fall table.

10" × 10" finished block
Use the larger block as the centerpiece of a Halloween placemat. The pattern also includes instructions for adding borders to turn the block into a finished placemat.

And of course, you don't have to stop there! Make several 10" blocks and arrange them into a table runner, wall hanging, or larger Halloween quilt.

Skill Level

Confident Beginner / Intermediate

The pattern uses basic patchwork techniques, including half-square triangles (HSTs), stitch-and-flip corners, and Y units. If you've made HSTs before, this is a fun way to combine familiar techniques into a seasonal design.

Fabric Ideas

Traditional orange, black, green, and cream make the pumpkin and bat instantly recognizable, but this block is also a great opportunity to play with your fabric scraps.

Try different orange prints for the pumpkin, a dark print for the bat, or switch the background to something unexpected. For the coaster version, you only need small pieces, making it especially useful for your scrap bin.

A Few Tips Before You Start

Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout and press after each construction step. For stitch-and-flip corners, sew just outside the marked diagonal line toward the corner that will be trimmed away. This little adjustment helps the folded corner reach the edge of the unit more accurately.

For the small 4½" version, accuracy is especially important because even a tiny difference in the seam allowance can affect the finished block size.

What You Can Make

With this pattern, you can make a 4½" coaster, a 10" quilt block, or add the included borders to create a placemat. You can also repeat the block to design your own table runner or quilt.
