Ixora Quilt Block

Free Pattern

Finished Sizes:  12" × 12"

Meet the Ixora Quilt Block, a floral-inspired block with bold geometric petals and lots of opportunities to play with color.

This block is my modified version of the traditional Key Lime Pie quilt block. I changed the design and construction to create a different look, and when I finished the block, the four-petal shape reminded me of an Ixora flower—a colorful tropical flower commonly seen here in Thailand. And that’s how this block got its name!

Different Ways to Make the Same Block

One of the fun things about quilting is that the same unit can often be made in more than one way. In this pattern, I’ve included a few options, such as the strip-set method and two different ways to make the Hourglass units, so you can choose whichever technique you prefer.

Skill Level

Confident Beginner / Intermediate

This block involves some sewing along bias edges, so it’s a nice step up if you’re ready to move beyond simpler quilt blocks. Bias edges may feel a little intimidating at first, but they’re a part of many quilting techniques and designs. As you explore more quilt blocks, you’ll eventually come across them—so this is a great block to practice with!

The key is to spray starch your fabric before cutting, then handle the bias edges gently and avoid stretching them as you sew. Take your time, and you’ll be just fine.

Fabric Recommendations

The Ixora Block is a fun one for playing with color value.

Using a stronger color for the four main petal sections helps the flower shape stand out, while contrasting fabrics in the smaller units add another layer of detail.

You don’t have to follow my color placement, though. Try it with:

Changing the color placement can give this block a completely different personality.

Tools Worth Having
An HST trimming ruler, such as a Bloc_Loc ruler, is also helpful for this block since there’s quite a bit of trimming involved. It’s not essential—a regular quilting ruler works too—but it definitely makes the trimming quicker and easier. If you’d like to get one, just click the link or the photo below.

Construction Notes

Before sewing, organize and label your cut pieces according to the pattern.

Pressing directions are included where helpful, but you can adjust them to suit your preferred method. A scant ¼" seam allowance can also help with accuracy when working with the smaller units.

If using the optional methods, follow only the cutting and construction instructions for the method you have chosen.
